Smokies
Location: Spans the border of North Carolina and Tennessee.
Description: Ridge upon ridge of endless forest straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. World renowned for the diversity of its plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains, and the quality of its remnants of Southern Appalachian mountain culture, this is America’s most visited national park.
Personal Notes: Great Smoky Mountains National Park is definitely a photographers paradise. Clingmans Dome at sunrise is an iconic site which should be the highlight of any trip to the Smokies. I traveled to the Smokies in late September, too early for the leaves, but with less crowds. I hiked a variety of nice trails and did a lot of photography. Highlights of the trip were the already mentioned sunrises at Clingmans Dome, multiple waterfalls and of course the wildlife. Waterfalls photographed include Juley Whank Falls, Tom Branch Falls, Indian Creek Falls, Mouse Creek Falls, Hen Wallow Falls, Grotto Falls, Rainbow Falls, Ramsey Cascades, Abrams Falls, Miegs Falls, Laurel Falls and Spruce Flats Falls. Wildlife seen included 4 bear including one cub, elk, deer, otter, turkey, and an albino groundhog.
